Standards & methods

Many LessonWave tools align to well-known standards and methods. You do not need to be an expert in any of them to use the tools, but here is what they mean and where they show up.

ACTFL proficiency (world languages)

ACTFL describes what a learner can do with a language, on a scale from Novice to Intermediate to Advanced to Superior, each with low, mid, and high sublevels. When you pick an ACTFL level on a world language tool, it shapes how much target language the output uses and how complex the tasks are. Tools like ACTFL Can-Do Objectives and the Spanish Lesson Plan Generator build their output around this scale.

WIDA proficiency (English learners)

WIDA describes English language proficiency for multilingual learners across the domains of reading, writing, listening, and speaking, on levels from Entering to Emerging to Developing to Expanding to Bridging. The ESL and ELL tools use WIDA levels to scaffold reading, vocabulary, and assessments so the content stays reachable.

TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling)

TPRS teaches a language through comprehensible, repetitive stories. The Micro-Telenovela Generator is built for this: short, engaging stories with built-in repetition and comprehension questions that give students lots of understandable input.

IPA (Integrated Performance Assessment)

IPA assesses language across three modes of communication: interpretive (reading and listening), interpersonal (two-way speaking and writing), and presentational (one-way speaking and writing for an audience). The IPA Assessment tool designs tasks and rubrics across all three modes.
